Juju hats, how we love thee. Handmade by the Bamileke people of Cameroon and worn traditionally as hats during rituals and ceremonies, these feathered wall hangings create a an eye-catching texture that gives us all the feels. Even better, styling these bursts of plumes is super simple and can be customized to whatever look you are trying to achieve. Here are our go-to tips for getting that good juju:
- The power of one… You can create quite a statement by styling a single juju hat as the focal location of the room – centered above a bed, sofa, shelves, or a dresser. Proportions are key here, so think about the size of both the object and the juju hat and how they relate to each other (i.e., a king-sized bed should be styled with a large juju hat and a narrow set of drawers should be styled with a small juju hat). When choosing colors, think about the overall color scheme of the room. White on white emphasizes texture and a cleaner look. Or, you can add extra dimension to a neutral room with a tan or brown juju hat. Looking for that powerful pop? Pair a dark colored wall with a white juju or really go for it with a yellow or purple juju hat to add a bold, playful punch.
- Birds of a feather… Amp up your space by combining multiple juju hats in a stunning array. Here’s where things get fun. Depending on the space, you can use any number of juju hats you want. Two create a sweet display, three can be used to frame an object below, and four, five (or even six!) create a sculptural wall that is sure to stop everyone in their tracks. We recommend varying sizes to create asymmetry and intrigue, highlighting the organic nature. This will take some playing around – start with the largest juju hats and work the smaller ones into the array as you go, stepping back occasionally to take it in from afar. Each hat just requires one simple nail, so it’s fairly easy to move around without damaging the wall if you change your mind.
- With flying colors… If you prefer to take the juju hat road less traveled: mix multiple colors of Juju’s into your display. This isn’t as daunting as you may think – we recommend mixing in one or two neutral toned Juju’s with a base of white. And if you’re feeling really bold, throw in one in a color.
