The Mazateca are indigenous to the northeastern corner of the Mexican state of Oaxaca, in the Sierra Mazateca range. This mountainous region, filled with valleys and a diversity of flora and fauna, inspires the embroidery that adorns Mazateca textiles. Thread is first made from either handspun cotton or locally-cultivated silk. Then, the thread is dyed with indigo, carmine, and other natural dyes to create a range of hues, from deep blue to bright red. The thread is woven on a backstrap loom into fabric; finally, the textile is embroidered by hand in a style unique to each village.
