Provenance
From the mountainous southwestern part of the Mexican state of Oaxaca, the Triqui are famous for their weaving. The woven textiles are made into long, loose blouses that serve as everyday wear for Triqui women. The craft is passed on from mother to daughter. Thread is colored with natural dyes, such as red oak and indigo, before being woven on a backstrap loom into abstract patterns. The symbols represent the historical, ecological, and mythical events in Triqui village life.
