Guatemalan Chicken Bus
Chicken buses are a staple of local transportation in Central America. Packed with people, luggage, and the occasional chicken, these buses speed wildly around the mountainous curves of Guatemala. Chicken buses are operated by a driver and an ayudante, or helper, who collects fares and loads passengers. These colorfully decorated vehicles are created by painting American school buses with vibrant words and figures, including the bus's name and route and religious iconography. The finishing touches are a blaring horn and bright flood lights for night driving on dark, unlit highways.
