Pina textiles, from the Spanish word for pineapple, are woven from the leaf of the pineapple plant. The green outer layer of the leaf is scraped away using a coconut shell or pottery shard. The finest fibers are then knotted together one by one to form a continuous thread. The thread is woven into a lightweight and sheer, yet strong, fabric. These coasters are further embellished by a traditional embroidery called calado. The threads of the pi_a cloth are trimmed and pulled together to create an open, lacelike design.
