Provenance
This basket is created by the women of the agricultural Hehe tribe of south-central Tanzania. Woven from milulu grass, a local reed-like swamp grass, and natural dyes, Iringa baskets are traditionally used as storage containers in the home or to carry produce to markets. The women first collect the milulu grass from riverbanks, then the grass is dyed and dried in the sun before weaving. The weave can be open and lacey, or it can be tight enough to contain liquids.
