Provenance

This locking box was made by the Tuareg people, a Berber tribe from northwest Africa. The Tuareg inhabit the middle and western Sahara, stretching from Libya to Mauritania. They are nomadic, migrating with their herds across the region. For over two millennia, the Tuareg operated the trans-Saharan caravan routes, connecting the great cities on the southern edge of the Sahara with the the northern coast of Africa. This wooden chest would have been used to store items during their frequent moves.
