Provenance

This mini locking box comes from Mauritania, West Africa. Historically, it was carried on the side of a camel as luggage, used to transport belongings and supplies through the desert, especially during periods of trade with European coastal merchants and Islamic dealers from the North. The wooden chest comes from a collection of carriers ranging in shape and size _ from miniature locking boxes to large cargo trunks.
