The Mixe are indigenous to the eastern highlands of the Mexican state of Oaxaca. The name Mixe derives from the Aztec word for cloud; the Mixe call themselves “people who speak the mountain language.” Mixe textiles are highly symbolic, with motifs representing the history, legends, and flora and fauna of the Mixe people. Common motifs include the double-headed eagle, representing the sun and the moon, and the hummingbird, a messenger between heaven and earth.
