The Mixteca are an indigenous people from the states of Oaxaca, Guerroro, and Puebla. In pre-Columbian times, the Mixteca were one of the major civilizations of Mesoamerica, known throughout the region for their crafts in stone, wood, and metal. Today, they are the third largest indigenous group in Mexico and are known for their weaving, pottery, and basketry. Traditional Mixteca textiles are woven on a backstrap loom from fine cotton dyed with natural dyes, such as indigo and colors derived from the coconut.
