Provenance
This basket, traditionally used to hold grain, was handwoven in Zimbabwe by the Ndebele people from natural grasses and dyes. Originally from South Africa, an offshoot of the Ndebele tribe migrated to Zimbabwe in the late 1830's and established the Northern Ndebele kingdom. The Ndebele are known for being formidable warriors and for their artistic creativity, embodied here in their bold and dramatic bowl baskets. Typical motifs include stars, diamonds, zig zags, and rings.
