This vintage pillow was handmade in the traditional technique of suzani embroidery. Suzani, created with a tambour hook, is a classic Central Asian textile characterized by flowers and meandering vines. A specialist known as a chizmachi draws out the suzani pattern and gives each fabric strip to an embroiderer. The finished pieces are sewn back together. The result is an ornate work created by several hands, producing charming irregularities and subtle mismatches that balance out the precision of the stitch. Flower designs are symbolic of fertility and fruitfulness. These textiles are traditionally used as well hangings or as a woman's marriage dowry. The suzani's decorate embroidery is also thought to possess a protective element. 20% of the proceeds from this limited edition piece support breast cancer treatment for women living in under-resoucred settings.
