Bi discs were first created by the Neolithic Liangzhu people of eastern China. Carved from jade and other stones, the circular shape symbolizes eternity and the heavens. Bi discs were traditionally used in burial rituals for individuals with high social status to accompany their spirits into the sky. Later, they became a symbol of victory in battle; the defeated leader would give his bi disc to the victor as a sign of acceptance.
