Provenance

Uzbekistan

This St. Frank vintage piece was created in Uzbekistan and consists of delicate silk embroidery on a silk-cotton blend backing. Suzani embroidery, which is made with a tambour hook, is a classic Central Asian textile characterized by flowers and meandering vines. This piece includes an Islamic-influenced trellis pattern as well as a pomegranate motif. Typical of suzani, the design is repeated in a regular grid pattern. The pomegranate is a common element in suzani embroidery, representing fertility with its many seeds. The flower designs are also symbolic of fertility and fruitfulness. These textiles are traditionally used as wall hangings or as a woman's marriage dowry. The suzani's decorative embroidery is also thought to possess a protective element.

The textile is carefully applied to a flax linen substrate, which provides a border between the textile and frame. This piece is available in our lucite frame. Our signature gold St. Frank plate is featured in the bottom right-hand corner of each piece.
